Project Overview

American Structural Engineering (ASE) served as the Prime Consultant for the inspection and structural analysis of ten R44 rail cars for the Staten Island Railroad. The ASE team performed detailed field inspections of critical structural areas, including car body bolster gussets, the connection between the car body bolster and side sill web, and HVAC support bracket areas. Following inspection, the team performed crack-growth and fatigue crack-growth analyses to assess structural integrity and predict the time until existing cracks could reach critical lengths. This analysis allowed ASE to provide recommendations on the optimal inspection schedule for the R44 cars. The final deliverables included comprehensive reports detailing inspection findings, analysis results, and actionable maintenance recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

Conducted field inspection of 10 R44 rail car bodies
Inspected critical structural locations: car body bolster gussets, side sill web connections, HVAC support brackets
Determined load conditions to support crack-growth analysis
Performed fatigue crack-growth analysis to predict critical crack development
Recommended optimal inspection intervals based on analysis results
Prepared and delivered final comprehensive report to the Project Manager
Ensured structural safety and compliance with transit authority standards
